Bad SchandauBad Schandau is situated in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, in a charming cavity at the estuary of the river Kirnitzsch into the Elbe. It is the oldest spa and therapy centre in Saxon Switzerland. The area developed from the first settlements of fishermen, lumberjacks and stone crushers by the end of the 18th century to, by the discovery of the region by travellers and relaxation-seekers, a spa resort. Theodor Körner called the area a “place of natural power and beauty” in 1810. Few areas combine such variety of contrasts and attractions in such a small space: distinctive rock towers, mighty table mountains, serpentine valleys, crystal clear mountain streams, blooming pastures, mysterious caves. The altitude is 125 to 250 m above sea level and the geographical situation creates a mild central uplands climate. Large forested areas, clear and healthy air and interesting attractions are ideal for relaxation and active recovery during all the seasons. Today Bad Schandau is a modern Kneipp spa resort with two further treatment and rehab clinics, the Tuscany thermal baths, 3 beauty farms, a number of physiotherapeutic treatments and cosmetics studios, the spa gardens with a Kneipp treading basin, health trails and a beautiful promenade at the banks of the Elbe river with a view on the rocks of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The small, idyllic town centre with its cafés, restaurants and shops, park centre and botanical gardens is ideal for a stroll or shopping. A variety of different hotels offer accommodation from a simple standard to five-star level. The surrounding are offers various possibilities for exercise: hiking, cycling, Nordic walking, rock climbing, swimming, canoeing and much more. The comprehensive traffic system of the regional transit section “Oberelbe” are available to make relaxing trips into the entire region without a car.
